I have been neglecting my journal. My apologies.

movies, 2009
  1. Hellboy II * * *
  2. Brothers Grimm * * *
  3. Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull * * *
  4. The Mummy * * * *
  5. Expelled: No Intelligence Allowed * * *
  6. Chocolat * * * * *
  7. The Other Boleyn Girl * * * *
  8. Light of My Eyes * * 1/2
  9. Journey to the Center of the Earth * * *
  10. The Mummy Returns * * * *
  11. Who the #$&% Is Jackson Pollock? * * * *
  12. Mrs. Winterbourne * * * *
  13. Encino Man * *
  14. The Last Time * *
  15. With Honors * *
  16. The Air I Breathe * * *
  17. Journey to the End of Night * * *
  18. Becoming Jane * * * 1/2
  19. In the Realms of the Unreal * * *
  20. The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor *
  21. Meet the Robinsons * * * *

Realms was intriguing, and a bit disturbing, but also heart warming. It is the story of Henry Darger and his art. I had never heard of Darger before, but some of the art did feel familiar. Mummy was horrible to the point that it induced actual pain. Maria Bello was horribly cast and should never, ever be allowed to fake a British accent again. Aging the son to 20 was a bad idea. Having the actor playing the son looking the same age as Brendan Fraser was worse. There was nothing for Jet Li and Michelle Yeoh to do. What a waste of talent and time.

on deck:

in instant queue:  Byron, Absence of Malice
to be mailed:  Children of the Corn,  The Spiderwick Chronicles (for Tiger Claw)

books, 2009
  1. Dragonsong, McCaffrey
  2. Dragonsinger, McCaffrey
  3. Dragondrums, McCaffrey
  4. According to the Pattern, Hill
  5. The Fast Food Diet, Sinatra
  6. The Great Physician's Rx for Weight Loss, Rubin
  7. The Perricone Weight Loss Diet, Perricone
  8. Outliers, Gladwell
  9. Beggars in Spain, Kress
Currently reading:  Whiskey and Water, Bear
On Hold:  Foreigner, Cherryh
The Asian Journal of Thomas Merton,Merton
The Burglar on the Prowl, Block
                  The Ship Who Sang, McCaffrey

Beggars is a reread, and it's worth reading twice.  Or perhaps even more.  It is speculative fiction set in the near future which examines the outcomes of gene modification, through the story of the "Sleepless".

Foreigner and Merton both have traces on them.  There is a second Foreigner in the system, but only one copy of Merton.  If the trace leads to a dead end, I'll just remove it from the list, since I'm not interested in buying it at this time.  If the library can't produce Foreigner or if I can't find a copy here at home (I know I used to own it), I'm willing to repurchase.  I added Burglar and Ship to the list while I wait for the two with the trace place on them.

time

I'm having issues with time, yet again.  Time spent on Delphi.  So it's time to take an extended hiatus, once I have assured that I have successfully downgraded from Plus back to basic.  I've also purchased several packs of index cards and several composition notebooks to be used for reminders and journals.  I'm not sure what I'm going to assign to journals and what I'm going to assign to reminder cards...if I do manage to establish a working system, I will blather about it here.

movies

It was a snow day.  Well, a snow day which has turned into a sleet day.  With sleet continuing through tomorrow around noon.   I just received the call notification that there will no school tomorrow, as well.

I glutted myself on Brendan Fraser movies, because I fully admit that I have a crush on him:

Mrs. Winterbourne *  *  *  *
Encino Man *  *
The Last Time *  *
With Honors *  *
The Air I Breathe *  *  *
Journey to the End of Night *  *  *

Please note that the four stars I've given Mrs. Winterbourne do not necessarily mean that it is a great movie.  It just means that I personally love it.  Brendan Fraser does the Tango.  My DNA insists I must love this.

Here's the total movie list for the year...

  1. Hellboy II * * *
  2. Brothers Grimm * * *
  3. Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull * * *
  4. The Mummy * * * *
  5. Expelled: No Intelligence Allowed * * *
  6. Chocolat * * * * *
  7. The Other Boleyn Girl * * * *
  8. Light of My Eyes * * 1/2
  9. Journey to the Center of the Earth * * *
  10. The Mummy Returns * * * *
  11. Who the #$&% Is Jackson Pollock? * * * *
  12. Mrs. Winterbourne *  *  *  *
  13. Encino Man *  *
  14. The Last Time *  *
  15. With Honors *  *
  16. The Air I Breathe *  *  *
  17. Journey to the End of Night *  *  *
  18. Becoming Jane * * * 1/2
Becoming Jane has the extra 1/2 star because the guy who played Tumnus from The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe played the male lead, Tom Lefroy.  I loved Mr. Tumnus.  Funny thing,  Lefroy has the same melty eyes as Mr. Tumnus.  Fancy that.

books

I have been to busy watching movies to read, but  I did put some more books on hold from the library:

Whiskey & Water, Bear
The Asian Journal of Thomas Merton, Merton
Beggars in Spain, Kress
Foreigner, Cherryh

I don't think they have Foreigner, because I put that on hold last week, and it claimed from the beginning that I was the first person in line.  I used to own it...I need to scour my shelves to see if it is hiding somewhere, and if not, I shall need to buy it second hand.  This is a reread, as I meant to read the series in full last year, and simply did not get that far.  I have read the first two in the series, so they should be relatively quick reads, once I get my hands on them.

I found Light of My Eyes disappointing.  Based on the reviews, I thought I would really like it.  It took a couple of stabs to get through it, because it simply spent too much time with poignant lingering.  While I understand that the film's self-involvement was a reflection of the characters' self-involvement, it was just too much.

On the other hand, the Mummy movies rock, despite their artistic mediocrity.  Fun flicks to watch with the boy.  And with Brendan Fraser, Arnold Vosloo and Oded Fehr there was plenty of eye candy for Mommy.  Not that the boy cared.  Both of us felt sorry for the mummy at the end.  While I understand why the movie has some harsh criticisms against it, Vosloo deserves credit not only for making a mummy sexy, but for making us feel sorry for him as he plunged to his ultimate demise.  Anck Su Namun was a bitch.

  8. Outliers, Gladwell
As with Blink and Tipping Point, Gladwell does not fail to impress.  I strongly recommend Outliers.  I doubt I will ever get 10,000 hours applied to any one pursuit, since I am so distractible, but maybe one day, I'll practice on of my interests long enough to achieve self-satisfaction.  I doubt that I have what it takes to be an Outlier myself.

Since my purse is not in reach, and my library card is in my purse, I will not be able to update my library queue tonight.  I will do that at a later date.

Sorry for my absence.  As often is the case, I was distracted.

home

The hutch has been disassembled and my kitchen appears airy and huge. Spousal unit is not convinced that he likes it, but I like being able to have a cork board to post my weekly menu, monthly calendar, and note pad by the phone. The only thing that lives on the sideboard (I suppose it is a sideboard now that it is no longer a hutch) is a basket with pens and pencils. At dinner time, I use the sideboard to place the serving dishes. I no longer suffer from family style dinner induced claustrophobia.

home
I'm in the middle of a campaign to disassemble the kitchen hutch, but I'm not sure if I can convince the spousal unit. I do not need the upper storage for practical purpose, and I'd love to use that vertical real estate to put a family message board in place.

It is ten minutes until my bedtime, so I won't be posting any pictures tonight. Perhaps I will have the time tomorrow.

self
I am accepting that the hardest thing to order is my time; time is a slippery thing, and the harder I try to hold on, the more it slips through my fingers. I now have even greater understanding of those sands in the hourglass. I also realize that while I often see myself as less busy than other people, my life is definitely full. Some of these folks who are busier than I am are not necessarily anymore organized than I am; they are simply on the road to complete burnout.

These are in alphabetical order, courtesy of the Loudoun County Public Library.   This list is comprised of books left on my library queue from the last two years (the Foreigner series by Cherryh, for example), books that I want to reread, a handful of kidlit that I haven't read yet, and books/writers recommended in journals that I read regularly.  If you think I got the idea of reading something from you, then you are probably correct.  The first books I'll be reading will be Dragonsong, Dragonsinger, and Dragondrums, since Jenny has them out from the library.

I must admit, I am completely taken by Grace Livingston Hill's books. They are Christian romances written and set in the first half of the 20th century. They aren't for everyone, but I personally  find their simplicity endearing. I think this is the first time I have exceeded my goal of 50 books for the year. Go me.

I haven't been watching nearly as many "watch instantly" options at Netflix...I need to kick that up a notch, to get the most out of my subscription. That won't be happening this week, however, with the travel schedule.

We'll be going to North Carolina to spend the holiday with the in-laws. I'm both looking forward to it, and dreading it a bit. There is always a drama, and I really don't like drama. I tend to let myself get caught up into in the flurry of excitement of the moment, and then regret it horribly after the fact. Sometimes I wish I could literally button my lip.

And Eternity, Anthony

I need to check my library queue to see if Eternity is ready to be picked up, or if I missed it somehow. I only remember getting the one call, and Extras was there for me when I last went to the library...Saturday morning, I think. I'll check through my complete queue, and see if I have anything else that is listed as Rust library, on the shelf. I'd like to have at least three books with me for the weekend...one for the ride down, one for the ride home, and one for those private moments I still to make sure that I don't go insane from the intensity level of a Greek-Irish brood. I'd be better off with five books, though, because I'm sometimes I tear through two books on the trip down.

poetry project
I don't have anything close to a poem for today yet; just to separate collections of lines.  I don't know how they will parse out, but I will post something today, even if it is just poemlet like Sunday's installation.

When I transcribed all of my verbal notes, I found this little line, and I have no idea how to use it, or why I said it in the first place, but I decided I simply must share:

cake, 2 Hail Marys, and call the Pope in the morning.

I have no idea what I was thinking when I said that, it was from two years ago.

I don't know if you've noticed, but as I've gone on, the installments have gotten a bit weaker. I think that's because the first stuff I was putting out had been hanging out in the corners of mind steeping, and the ones from the past couple of days are truly first drafts, rather raw with no finesse.

Yeah!  I just check my library account and For Love of Evil is ready for me.  So is Under a Velvet Cloak...I'm not sure if I'm going to read that before And Eternity.  I guess it depends on how quickly Eternity is available, and if anyone else is waiting for Cloak.

Into the Wild was lent to me by a child at the after school program where I work.  I think that totally rocks...a lot of kids simply would not have the courage to ask an adult if they wanted to read a book they were reading. Cool kid, and so far, a cool book.  It's about feral cats fighting for their territory:  For generations, four clans of wild cats have shared the forest. When their warrior code is threatened by mysterious deaths, a house cat named Rusty may turn out to be the bravest warrior of all. --Summary provided at library website, probably the same as the blurb from the back of the book.

Dragons of Autumn Twilight has been moved to the deck because I'm just not the mood for that sort of nostalgia-read. I do think that I'm going to re-read Anthony's Incarnation series. In fact, I recently learned that there is another in series titled Under a Velvet Cloak, that I never knew about.

Only ten more books to hit goal for this year; I believe I might surpass it, but by saying that, I probably just cursed myself. Tomorrow, I'll update movies when I shuffle my Netflix queue.

Do What You Are has been enlightening. I understand why I have such difficulties with Myers-Briggs style personality tests, and why I flip between E/I and P/J. After reading about how the types and functions interplay, I'm pretty sure that I'm an INFP. Part of the problem is the wording of the tests, too. While my indecision is *natural* it's not what I would personally call a *preference*. It's not that I *prefer* to leave things open...I actually feel trapped when leaving decisions unmade, and feel peace once they are made, but it's simply my nature to draw out a decision. Sometimes, we don't actually enjoy our natural state of being. Do What You Are also discussed how age/maturity levels affect how the various functions of your type can develop. That, too, was eye opening. While I've finished reading it, I do have some notes that I want to take before returning it.

Dragons of Autumn Twilight is much worse than I remembered. But I'm still enjoying it through veil of reminiscence.

I had to take Almost Alice, by Naylor out of the current line up since I forgot to pick it from the library over the weekend and my hold on it is up. I'll add it back in once it clears my hold list with the library. I've donated Star Wars: The Magic of Myth to Tiger Claw, so it will probably be in the "currently reading" list for quite some time...I'll just skim through it when I'm at work.

**Note:  I knew I read something other than Meyer, Brashares, and Beddor on vacation.  I think I'm still missing something, though.

I'm forgetting something.  I know that I read more than Beddor and Meyer on vacation, but I can't remember what.  Dang it.

When last posting about movies, I mentioned that I wanted to watch a mainstream blockbuster next. But life does not always go as planned. I had intended to see Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull the weekend after my birthday, but it simply was not to be. We ran out of time of Saturday (but we did go out to dinner at a very mainstream restaurant -- it was a Red Lobster night), and on Sunday we imploded due to the heat and humidity after the church picnic.

I changed into jammies, started reading, and remained glued to books as often as possible during the week:

2008 Books

  1. Plague of Angels, Tepper
  2. Body Clutter, Cilley
  3. How Clean Is Your House, Woodburn
  4. You Are What You Eat, McKeith
  5. Healthy Hedonist, Kornfeld

Other than reading, I've been rather unprolific.
